LONDON - Six people were missing early Sunday after a cargo ship sank in the Irish Sea.
The BBC reported that he 265-foot Swanland sent out a mayday call at around 2 a.m. local time (9 p.m. ET), when it was about 30 miles northwest of the Llyn peninsula in Wales.
Two male crew members were later rescued from the water.
Britain's Sky News quoted a coast guard spokeswoman as saying that the vessel had suffered a "cracked hull." She described the sea conditions in the area as "challenging at best." Gale-force winds were also reported.
The BBC reported that rescuers arriving at the scene found "two life rafts and some floating debris."
The ship was reportedly carrying 3,000 tons of limestone.
The rescue operation was launched from RAF Valley, the UK air force base where Prince William is based. He serves as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot. However, it was not immediately clear whether he was on duty this weekend.
