Police are faced with a unique problem as hundreds of safes are found along the tsunami-battered coast. There are no cars inside the parking garage at Ofunato police headquarters. Instead, hundreds of dented metal safes, swept out of homes and businesses by last month's tsunami, crowd the long rectangular building.
Any one could hold someone's life savings.
Safes are washing up along the tsunami-battered coast, and police are trying to find their owners — a unique problem in a country where many people, especially the elderly, still stash their cash at home. By one estimate, some $350 billion worth of yen doesn't circulate.

 In Japan, only in the last day (March 18, began in Tokyo at 18:00 MSK) occurred more than 20 earthquakes with a magnitude aftershock from 4,5 to 6,1. All the aftershocks were concentrated near the eastern coast of the main Japanese island of Honshu, that is in the area where the March 11 happened in the history of the country's most powerful earthquake of magnitude 9.
According to the police headquarters in Japan at 16:00 MSK, confirmed the death of almost 5,7 thousand people from disaster strikes. More than 9,5 thousand people remain unaccounted for. Thus, the possible number of deaths can exceed 15 thousand people.
